For those of us that are a bit older, the movie Silkwood starring Meryl Streep, Cher and Kurt Russell, should sound familiar. I remember watching the movie mostly because of Kurt Russell, but I was old enough to somewhat realize that it was a movie based on actual events. Silkwood was based on the life of Karen Silkwood…
This day in 1974 Karen Silkwood was killed in a mysterious car accident, she was 28 years old. Karen Silkwood was working in a nuclear plant in Oklahoma at the time of her death. As a part of the union at the plant, she had come forward with accusations against the plant. At the time of the car accident, Karen had been en route to meet with a New York Times reporter. Her body was found to have high levels of contamination, especially in the lung and gastrointestinal area. Read more about Karen Silkwood here.
The movie Silkwood was filmed in 4 places here in the United States ~ one of the locations was just a few miles from me in Texas City, Texas. Only 1 of the filming sites is thought to still be standing… Monterrey House Restaurant on Texas Ave is thought to now be El Poblano Taqueria restaurant. Texas City is very much a chemical plant town, with several plants in close proximity and bordered on the east side by Galveston Bay. There have been a number of explosions there over the years.
