Today, I am sharing my visit to the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary back 2010. The sanctuary is located in the Southern Black Hills of South Dakota just outside Hot Springs. Founded by Dayton O. Hyde in 1987 with the first horses arriving in 1988.
You can learn more at the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary website. Donations and sponsorships are available. The sanctuary is no longer open to the public, but you can make a difference in their lives and help them continue to live and roam free.
In 2013, there was a documentary, “Running Wild: The Life of Dayton O’ Hyde” which tells the incredible story of his entire life and his quest to free the wild horses. Sadly, Dayton passed away in 2018 at the age of 93.
I did have the pleasure of meeting Dayton on my visit and his was incredibly gracious.
