A Southern Girl’s View… The Famous Calamity Jane | South Dakota Travel Writer Photographer

Today we celebrate the birthday of the wild west’s own Calamity Jane…  Ms Jane was born in Princeton Missouri in 1852.  She spent her childhood in Missouri, but eventually moved with her family to Montana.  It was a few years later that she joined up with a scientific expedition heading in the Black Hills of South Dakota, more than likely as a laundress.   Eventually her hard life caught up with her and she died at age 51.  She is buried in the historic Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Deadwood, South Dakota.   Her grave is right beside the grave of Wild Bill Hickok.  The cemetery is built into the hills and overlooks the sprawling infamous town of Deadwood.  I visited with Lil’ Lucy, but sadly they would not allow me to bring her into the cemetery.
